How Long Should My AC Last?

This is a good question. The age of an air conditioner depends on many factors like maintenance, repair needs, and the climate in which it runs. For instance, we deal with pretty mild summers compared to the long and brutal summers of a home in Arizona. That means that our air conditioners run on a monthly basis, and there are whole swathes of time where we don’t use them.

As long as you properly maintain your air conditioner every year, and you call for professional support when it’s needed, your AC should last 10-15 years easily.

What’s the Difference Between an AC and a Heat Pump?

Heat pumps are air conditioners, but air conditioners aren’t heat pumps. If that sounds confusing, let us explain!

An air conditioner cools a home by evaporating and condensing refrigerant in a system that draws heat away. A heat pump does the exact same thing except with one important distinction–a heat pump can run in reverse. This means a heat pump can be an air conditioner and a heater at the same time!

Why Are Ductless Systems More Expensive?

Ductless systems sound like a great investment to many homeowners until they examine the price tag and wonder why such a small, wonderful unit can cost so much. Here are two reasons.

The first reason is that there’s a huge demand for ductless heat pumps. They’re hyper-efficient and powerful, and they work for pretty much any home, so a lot of people are buying them up which drives the price up.

Also, ductless heat pumps contain a lot of intricate technology that allows them to not only be heat pumps, but run without the use of air ducts as well. This technology costs, well, more money than a normal system!

Does My AC Consume Refrigerant?

The short answer is no, but it’s a bit more complicated than that!

An air conditioner is not supposed to consume any refrigerant. It’s a closed-loop system, which means that refrigerant cycles through the entire system without losing any. However, if your air conditioner requires a refrigerant recharge, or it doesn’t have enough refrigerant to operate correctly, then it’s likely leaking refrigerant, which is a problem that needs to be fixed.
