Hooray! Your appointment is booked to have your heating system replaced. You’ve chosen exactly the type and model you want, with the help of HVAC experts. You know you and your family will be cozy and happy with it for many years to come. But that installation appointment is coming up. Are you ready? Do you know everything you need to know, or do you have questions?

Well, we’re always happy to answer anything our customers want to know. We believe that the more you know, the better performance you can get from your HVAC systems. Let’s arm you with some knowledge! Here’s the scoop on how heating installation works, how long it takes, and what you can do to be as prepared as possible and make the process go quickly.

The Heating Installation Process

Sometimes, some steps need to be taken before the heating system itself can be installed. If this is the case for you, don’t worry, you’ll know about this in advance. It won’t be a surprise on installation day! This can happen if sections of your ductwork need to be replaced if you’re switching heating types, like from a furnace to a radiant system, or if you’re changing your energy source, say, from electricity to gas.

Once any major work on the infrastructure supporting your HVAC system is done—ducts, registers, gas piping—it’s just a matter of swapping out the units. Your technicians will first need to get the areas where they’ll be moving around nice and clear. They’ll disconnect and remove the old system, put the new one in place and connect it, and turn it on! That’s all there is to it.

The Heating Installation Time Window

How long will this take, from start to finish? Well, we always urge customers to make sure they have the entire day free. In certain cases, it can be an eight-hour job. But with a little preparation on your part, you can increase your chances of a quick installation. It can take as little as four hours in an ideal situation!

Preparing Your Home

The first thing to consider is the approach to the house. Where will the installation techs need to park? Which doorway will make it easiest to maneuver equipment, not just from the truck to the door, but through the house to the location of the furnace? Move everything you can to make a wide, clear path, free of bicycles and baseball bats, Lincoln Logs, and laundry baskets.

Next, make sure there’s nothing close to the furnace. You shouldn’t be storing anything within five feet of it, anyway! That can create a dangerous fire hazard. Also, your technicians need to be able to move around easily while they work.

Finally, right before your appointment, put your pets in a safe space elsewhere. Everything will go more quickly if nobody is worrying about someone escaping out an open door, or getting underfoot!
