Get Ready for Your Air Conditioning Replacement

a-family-standing-outside-their-front-door

Getting a new AC system is an absolute relief. The new air conditioner will work so well! It will be more efficient than your old system! And new air conditioners so rarely need repairs or have problems—what a joy that will be. But before you can simply kick back and let that cold air wash over you, you need to have the old air conditioner taken out and the new one installed.

Air conditioning replacement is old hat to us. We do it all the time! But it’s not something that happens every day in the average homeowner’s life. So you’d probably like to know more about what to expect. What can you do to get ready for your air conditioning replacement appointment? We’ve got great tips that will help it go quickly and smoothly.

Clear Your Day

One of the main questions we get asked is, “How long does an air conditioning replacement appointment take?” While every situation is different, we can give you a general idea. If there are major modifications required before your installation—say, if your home doesn’t have ducts and you need those installed—your contractor may have made appointments for you on multiple days. Otherwise, you just need one day.

Don’t worry, it probably won’t take the entire day! But it might take up to eight hours, so you should just make sure you don’t have any other commitments that day. The good news is that some installations take as little as four hours! How can you increase your chances of a quick installation? By following these other tips.

Clear the Way Outdoors

Where will your installers park? Where is the outdoor AC unit? Which door will be best to carry large equipment through? Once you’ve figured those things out, plan out the paths. From the work truck to the outdoor unit, and to that door, make sure nothing is in the way. The last thing you want is an AC installer tripping over a skateboard or a soccer ball!

Around the outdoor unit, make sure there’s space to work, and to move the units around. This means trimming plants or trees and raking up leaves and twigs. This will be great for your new system, too, because air circulation around the outdoor unit is critical for top performance.

Clear the Way Indoors

From your door to the indoor unit, clear a wide path, moving furniture if necessary and tidying anything that might get underfoot. Make sure there will be plenty of elbow room for working in the area around the indoor unit.

Pet Problem Prevention

Dogs absolutely love inspecting every part of a new AC system. (And every part of the installation techs!) Cats can also be extremely curious and friendly—or very stressed out and inclined to try to escape through a door that’s being held open for installers with appliances. Your installation will be quicker and easier for your techs and safer for your pets if they’re kept in another part of the house.

Prepare Your Questions

Once the system is installed, your techs will make sure you know how to use it and have the owner’s manual in hand. If you have any specific questions about things like maintenance needs, how to change the air filter, or maximizing efficiency, jot those down beforehand so you won’t forget.
