The Link Between AC Tune-Ups and Repairs

tools-for-HVAC-repair

As we are forever trying to teach our children, our choices matter, and our actions have consequences. When we make better decisions to begin with, we’ll end up happier with the results. Have you thought about how this might relate to your air conditioner?

As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you are proactive about taking good care of your AC system, you can avoid problems that would be difficult or expensive to fix. The best thing you can do is get AC tune-ups every single year. Here’s how that will affect your air conditioner and help you avoid repair needs.

Cleaning

The first step in any AC tune-up is for the technician to thoroughly clean the entire system. This will make it easy for them to see all the components clearly. It will also eliminate a wide array of problems that mess can cause if it’s left to linger in your air conditioner.

Dust is obvious, and you can probably tell that it’s not great for your indoor air quality to have dust kicked out by your air conditioner. But the dust can cause serious AC issues, too. It gets between moving parts and scrapes away at components. And it blankets the inside of the unit, obstructing airflow and trapping heat. This leads to overheating, short cycling, and sometimes even burned-out motors.

The condensate pan is another area where cleaning is critical. This is where moisture accumulates. If it stays wet and dirty, all kinds of things can grow there, like mold, bacteria, and algae. This can clog the drain, causing the pan to overflow and create water damage, or forcing the system to shut down to avoid that overflow.

Inspecting

With all the mess cleaned away, your technician can meticulously inspect all the components. Anything that has come loose from a year’s vibration will be secured tightly into position. Any parts that are wearing out can be replaced. Any concerns can be addressed now before they turn into big problems that necessitate major repairs.

Testing

Many of the components of an air conditioner are electrical. To keep them operating safely and effectively, and to make sure they’re not wasting energy, it’s important for these parts to be tested. Wire connections must be secure. The blower fan motor must be drawing the correct amount of power. And the thermostat must be accurately calibrated.

Lubricating

Those parts of the AC system that are not electrical are mechanical; that is, they are moving parts that rub against one another. Just like when you rub your hands together when you’re cold, this friction causes heat. Overheating, as mentioned above, can cause frequent shutdowns and even damage to the motor. Fresh lubricant is added during maintenance to keep friction minimal.

Once all these tasks have been accomplished, your air conditioner will be in excellent shape, and ready to keep chugging along for another year. In fact, after maintenance, your air conditioner’s chances of requiring repairs this year will go down by 85%! So don’t put it off any longer. Schedule air conditioning service in Whitefish, MT.
