Is a Heat Pump an Upgrade From AC?

When something needs to be replaced, we often hope to swap it out for something better than what we had before. But when there’s a wide variety of options, it can be hard to tell what’s actually better and what’s simply different. This is absolutely true when it comes to HVAC systems.

If your air conditioner is causing you some trouble, not providing quite the comfort you would like, or is getting on in years, you’re probably starting to think about replacing it. And if you’re researching your options, you’ve come across some information about heat pumps. Would getting a heat pump be an upgrade from having an air conditioner, or just a different option? Here are some facts to consider.

All New Systems Will Be an Upgrade

Today’s AC and heat pump systems will all provide greater satisfaction and efficiency than the older system you’re looking to replace. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, as air conditioners age, they become less effective and less efficient. Regular maintenance can hold this deterioration off for quite a while, but eventually, the wear and tear will catch up. So a new system will be much better!

Additionally, there are new features that make newly manufactured high-efficiency heat pumps and air conditioners better than your old one was even the day you had it installed. Coils with greater thermal conductivity, multi-phase compressors, and variable-speed motors all save energy while providing top-notch cooling. So whatever you decide, heat pump or AC, it will be an improvement.

The Heat Pump Advantage

While any new high-efficiency system will give you a big boost in your energy savings—and thus a drop in your utility bills—a heat pump does offer something an air conditioner doesn’t. Heating! By reversing the flow of the refrigerant through the system, a heat pump can carry heat into your home instead of only being able to carry heat out.

This is in fact where the heat pump’s efficiency is so incredibly striking. Generating heat uses a huge amount of energy. That’s why it’s so expensive to use a furnace all winter. But the heat pump doesn’t have to generate heat at all. It’s simply moving it from place to place, which can be done with much, much less electricity.

Any new system you get, you’ll have amazing high-efficiency options for home cooling. But if you choose a heat pump, you’ll be able to have the highest-efficiency heating that is available today. This means that if your heating system is also getting old, if you’re concerned about your environmental impact, or if you’re sick and tired of paying so much for heat, a heat pump is definitely an upgrade from an air conditioner.
