3 Tips for a Malfunctioning Heater

woman-enjoying-heater

Heating systems are designed to be as reliable as possible. They might not be the prettiest purchase in the world, and they sure don’t look like they make much sense from an outside perspective, but they’re built to be powerhouses of heat energy.

The reason behind their high installation cost is usually due to the fact that they’re constructed out of robust materials, safeguards in the case of a gas furnace, several different methods for energy efficiency, and more. They’re just designed to keep running, day and night, while your family stays safe.

But when your heating system starts to malfunction, it can also be extremely frustrating. How can a system that was designed to be durable for a decade or more start running into such simple problems?

Well, just like every machine, sometimes there can be a problem unique to your home or system, and that’s what professionals are for. Call our team for heating repairs in Kalispell, MT, but be sure to follow this guide when doing some basic troubleshooting.

Tip #1: Check for Tripped Circuits

Every heating system relies at least someone on electrical energy. Yes, even modern gas furnaces rely on an electrical ignition system and other electrical monitoring devices like your thermostat in order to function properly.

Due to weather events and power fluctuations, it’s pretty common for the power grid to run into trouble, especially in less populated areas like ours.

So, when the power goes out or a power surge occurs and your circuits trip, you’ll need to be the one responsible for turning it on. Otherwise, the heating system won’t work properly.

This is what maintenance is good for. If you’d like to learn about how to flip the circuits back on and deal with your malfunctioning heating system in the event of a power outage, then we can walk you through it in person. But if your heating system just won’t operate at all, then that’s cause for a repair call.

Tip #2: Listen for Strange Noises

Heating systems don’t talk, but they sure seem like it when they encounter problems. Noises are one of the first and most obvious signs that something is clearly wrong with your heating unit.

Noises like grinding, shaking, booming, and rumbling are never good and require professional support. These can be the first sign of a broken component or a heating system that is about to overheat and shutdown.

It’s hard to be sure from a homeowner’s perspective, which is why calling for support is usually the best thing to do early.

Tip #3: Change the Air Filter

For forced-air heating systems, they rely on an air filter component to trap dust, debris, and other contaminants that would otherwise clog up the airways and damage your heating system.

While this might seem like a bit of a luxury component, we promise it’s important to the functionality of the unit.

For instance, a heating system can become wildly inefficient when it starts consuming more air due to a clogged-up air filter.

Also, once the air filter clogs up, it can’t protect those sensitive components anymore and you could have a damaged heat pump with dirty coils or a furnace that gets worn down.

Be sure to change your air filter every 1-3 months of operation to ensure your system stays efficient and in good shape.
